SIGCHI Premier Session_2014. 02. 14(금) 10:00 ~ 13:00

Fred Sampson(Vice President for Operations of ACM SIGCHI EC)

  • Fred Sampson
  • 발표 주제 : "When 'Help' Doesn't: User Assistance in the User Interface"
  • We'll discuss the value of getting users the help that they need, where and when they need it, and making user assistance an integral part of the human - computer interaction

Philippe Palanque (Adjunct Chair for Specialized Conferences of ACM SIGCHI EC)

  • Philippe Palanque
  • 발표 주제 : Task-Centred Design, Construction and Operation of Safe, Usable and Reliable Interactive and (partly-)Autonomous Systems
  • Even though the HCI community is currently investing a huge amount of resource in the design and evaluation of user interfaces and interaction techniques very little effort is spent on the design of interactive systems. Building such systems requires blending knowledge from different domains such as Software Engineering, HCI, Dependable and Secure Computing, Human Factors,...The presentation will discuss the need for a broader view in order to design Interactive Systems, arguing that interaction and interfaces are only the visible part of the iceberg. Addressing the problem requires the definition of methods, notations, processes and tools to go from early informal requirements to deployed and maintained operational interactive systems. The presentation will focus on critical interactive systems for which the cost of a failure is significantly higher than the development costs. We address that problem by proposing an integrated framework for the iterative design of operators' procedures and tasks, training material and processes and the interactive system itself. Tasks models are the cornerstone of this framework offering support not only at design time but also at operation time by providing operators with contextual information. We will emphasize the support offered by tasks models when automation and function allocation have to be designed especially in the area of command and control systems where higher levels of automation remain a recurring target. Examples will be taken from interactive cockpits of large civil commercial aircrafts such as the A380, satellite ground segment and Air Traffic Management applications.

  • 발표 주제 : Education for Interaction Design – Teaching considered harmful
  • My team is responsible for teaching Interaction Design, in many countries and cultures, as part of various curriculums (from Cognitive Ergonomics to Informatics to Architecture). The settings are mostly blended learning. The research of our team aims at designing electronic learning environments. Our research paradigm is action learning. We will report our growing understanding and show unexpected effects that forced us to reconsider the role of the teacher.

Tuomo Kujala (Vice President for Chapters of ACM SIGCHI EC)

  • 발표 주제 : VisGuard – Proactive Distraction Prevention System
  • Out of all safety-critical events in traffic it has been estimated that even as much as 80% involve driver inattention as a causal factor. Field studies have shown that drivers are trying to keep off-road glance durations at e.g. mobile devices within safe limits but that often their allocation of visual attention is inefficient and unsafe. VisGuard distraction prevention system is intended to warn the driver to focus on the driving task before visual distraction by a mobile device use is realized. The system gives the guidance by taking into account the visual demands based on the current driving situation and driver's skills. The presentation will introduce the warning system and the latest data from a pilot study conducted in Finland early 2014 with several hundred drivers.

  • 발표 주제 : Multimodal Fusion and Illusion: An Alternative to Physical Immersion?
  • In this talk, I briefly review my previous and current works in applying multimodal fusion and illusory sensation phenomena to HCI. One main goal is to enhance the interaction experience in non-immersive platforms such as the wearable and mobile devices. I will illustrate how relatively high sense of presence, wide perceived field of view and significant tangibility can be achieved with reduced hardware through multimodal fusion, illusory sensation and clever interaction design.

  • 발표 주제 : UX 디자인과 절묘한 타협 : Art of compromise in ux design
  • As Smart Phones have become generalized most users now have the ability and information access similar to a personal computer in their own pocket. The innovation made through this easy access looks like a breakthrough in the convenience and effectiveness but on the other hand as the "smart life style" becomes common the complexity of the user experience also rises.
Working and supervising the user experience of smart products in a corporate environment we can see the conflict between the needs of a more enhanced and sophisticated experience as well as the need for a simple and natural experience.
Based on my experience I would like to deal with the issues that would arise in the actual development environment. The conflict between the basic needs of emotional, realistic effects, values that satisfy the user experience and the practical side of with technical constraints in implementation, performance quality, meeting the schedule and investment of the development resources, etc.

  • 발표 주제 : 소셜 TV와 사용자 경험:What Do Users Want from Social TV?: The Mediating Role of Sociality and Interactivity on the Effect of Performance on Attitude
  • Social TV, a new interactive television service, has been rapidly developing. With the conceptual model of interactivity and sociability, this study empirically investigates the effects of perceived interactivity on the motivations and attitudes toward Social TV. A model is created to validate the relationship of perceived interactivity to performance, attitude, and intention. Further, the model examines the mediating roles of perceived interactivity in the effect of performance on attitude toward Social TV. Empirical evidence supports the mediating role of perceived interactivity. Implications of the findings are discussed in terms of building a theory of interactivity and providing practical insights into developing a user-centered Social TV interface.
