Abstract :
In this talk, we examine and highlight the HCI and usability issues that afford renewed perspectives and practical implications to enhance the design and enactment of technology-enabled learning. Learning can be studied with different levels of analytical lenses - at the individual level, at the team level or at the classroom level. We explore usability issues that relate to each of these levels, for example, the notion of orchestration that relies on light-weight minimalist indicators to assist the teacher or instructor in facilitatingeffective learning in a classroom. We also explore how some learning theories influences or interacts HCI design, such as how the cognitive load theory, which is associated with memory load issues, has to say about the design of learning. We also draw on perspectives from the learning sciences to explore HCI issues, like the design of different or multi-modalities for interaction, and the creation of interface designs like Augmented Reality. By drawing on and using examples from my research on rapid collaborative learning, mobile seamless learning, and other learning sciences interventions in the classroom, we will explore the common spaces or intersections between learning, educational technology design and human-computer interaction design.

When top leaders from multiple leading technology companies were asked this question, some common patterns emerged. This talk will discuss what some of the top UX practitioners in the world consider the top 3 problems in UX today, and how to tackle them. Emerging from real-world experiences and stories, these problems are important for UX leadership and the UX community to resolve in order to advance our discipline and achieve success.

Abstract :

가끔은 한 발 떨어져서 지나온 과거를 돌이키는 것이 미래의 새로운 영감을 얻는데 도움이 된다. 한국은 지난 30년간 세계에서도 유례없는 빠른 속도로 정보화를 이룩해 왔다. 1980년대부터 시작된 선도적인 인터넷 인프라 개발, 몰입과 도전이 가능했던 환경과 문화, 선도적인 브로드밴드 전략과 혁신적인 인터넷 기업의 탄생, 적극적인 해외진출 노력 등이 어우러진 결과이다. 이러한 혁신의 배경에는 실패를 두려워하지 않고 도전하는 혁신의 문화가 있었다. 이제 우리는 지난 30년의 노력을 뛰어넘는 혁신과 도전을 통해 새롭게 대두되는 지능화 물결을 헤쳐 나가야 한다. 지능화 혁명이라 불리는 4차 산업혁명은 인공지능을 기반으로 ICT 산업뿐 아니라 제조, 의료, 농업 등 다양한 산업분야가 혁신화 되어 가는 과정을 말한다. 지금까지의 정보화 혁명이 논리적이고 계획적인 프로그래밍 작업이었다면, 지능화 혁명은 기계가 방대한 데이터를 반복 학습하는, 마치 인간의 직관이 발전하는 것과 유사하다. 이러한 지능화의 특징은 지금까지의 경쟁 방식과 범위, 산업구조, 일하는 방식 모두가 빠르게 변화시키고 있다. 따라서 4차 산업혁명 시대를 준비한다는 것은 단순히 기술 차원의 준비를 넘어 기업 및 조직, 국가 전반의 종합적 준비가 필요하다. 이번 강연이 정보화의 역사를 돌아보고, 앞으로 펼쳐질 지능화의 미래를 상상해 볼 수 있는 좋은 기회가 되길 바란다.

발표 주제 : 뇌공학은 인간-컴퓨터 상호작용에 어떻게 기여할 것인가?

Abstract :
최근 빠르게 발전하고 있는 신경과학과 뇌공학은 인간 뇌에 대한 이해를 높이고 인지 사고 행동에 폭넓은 관점을 제공하고 있다. 이를 바탕으로 인간이 컴퓨터나 로봇 혹은 다양한 기계들과 어떻게 상호작용할 수 있는지에 대한 가능성도 광범위하게 탐색되고 있다. 본 강연에서는 뇌공학의 최전선에선 어떤 일이 벌어지고 있으며, 이를 활용해 인간-컴퓨터 상호작용에 기여할 수 있는지 논의해보고자 한다.

Abstract :

The continuing data deluge presents everyday people with unprecedented and overwhelming volumes of data.
Addressing this new data will require we embrace machine learning as a key part of the future of everyday
interaction. This presents both an opportunity and a challenge for human-computer interaction:
machine learning offers a unique tool for scaling human attention onto new forms of everyday data,
but its complexity and opacity are barriers to effective design.

Using examples from our research in everyday interaction with machine learning, I will argue that familiar ideas
and perspectives from the human-computer interaction community can be powerful in addressing these
emerging challenges:

- Our research in tools like Gestalt has explored how designs that constrain interaction can effectively
remove barriers and allow more people to leverage machine learning approaches.
- Our research in tools like CueFlik and Gesture Script then extends this to questions of action, alignment,
and accident in defining a shared language for interaction with data.
- Our ongoing research in personal informatics asks what goals people bring to new forms of personal data and
how we might design analyses and tools to support those goals.
Overall, I will use the ideas explored in these examples to argue that the human-computer interaction
community's principles of control and empowerment are exactly the perspectives we need in designing
the emergence of everyday machine learning.
